Carmel Highlands was established by Franklin Devendorf and Frank Powers in 1916. Early folk lore has it that the Carmel Highlands area was settled by Scottish sailors who had jumped ship and named the area because of the resemblance to the Scotland coast. Today this area is an exclusive area with many expensive homes perched above the rugged coast. The real estate in this entire area is some of the most expensive in the United States. Many celebrities have homes and vacation homes in the Highlands and Big Sur.
These homes boast home unparalleled views of the ocean surf, whale migration and breathtaking sunsets. Volcanic peaks rise from the surf and towering redwoods meet with the rugged coastline. Its wild natural beauty can be experienced at numerous private and public campgrounds, parks, ocean and river beaches which include three million acres of untouched wilderness and three hundred miles of trails on state and federal land.
